The Trek to Adam’s Peak

The trek to Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and spiritual hiking experiences. Rising to a height of 2,243 meters, the peak is famous not only for its breathtaking views but also for its sacred significance to multiple religions. Buddhists believe the footprint at the summit belongs to the Buddha, while Hindus attribute it to Lord Shiva, and Muslims and Christians often regard it as the footprint of Adam or St. Thomas. This blend of spiritual significance makes the climb a pilgrimage for thousands each year, particularly during the pilgrimage season from December to May.

The trail typically begins in the village of Nallathanniya, with a well-marked path leading through 5,500 steps to the summit. The hike can take 3-5 hours depending on pace, with trekkers often starting in the early morning hours to reach the top by sunrise. Watching the first light of dawn illuminate the surrounding mountains and casting the mountain’s iconic shadow over the valley is a truly unforgettable experience.

The climb can be challenging, with steep steps and cool highland temperatures, but rest stops along the way provide a chance to recharge. Adam’s Peak is more than a trek—it’s a journey filled with natural beauty, local culture, and profound spirituality, offering an unparalleled view of Sri Lanka’s landscape and a connection to its diverse traditions.
